Parts of Speech

The Parts of Speech
Traditional grammar classifies words based on eight parts of speech: the verb, the noun, the pronoun, the adjective, the adverb, the preposition, the conjunction, and the interjection.

Each part of speech explains not what the word is, but how the word is used. In fact, the same word can be a noun in one sentence and a verb or adjective in the next. The next few examples show how a word's part of speech can change from one sentence to the next, and following them is a series of sections on the individual parts of speech, followed by an exercise.

Books are made of ink, paper, and glue.
In this sentence, "books" is a noun, the subject of the sentence.

Deborah waits patiently while Bridget books the tickets.
Here "books" is a verb, and its subject is "Bridget."

We walk down the street.
In this sentence, "walk" is a verb, and its subject is the pronoun "we."

The mail carrier stood on the walk.
In this example, "walk" is a noun, which is part of a prepositional phrase describing where the mail carrier stood.

The town decided to build a new jail.
Here "jail" is a noun, which is the object of the infinitive phrase "to build."

The sheriff told us that if we did not leave town immediately he would jail us.
Here "jail" is part of the compound verb "would jail."

They heard high pitched cries in the middle of the night.
In this sentence, "cries" is a noun acting as the direct object of the verb "heard."

The baby cries all night long and all day long.
But here "cries" is a verb that describes the actions of the subject of the sentence, the baby.

The next few sections explain each of the parts of speech in detail. When you have finished, you might want to test yourself by trying the exercise.

Alondra's 2nd Journal

I want to study Italian. Italian is a cool language.I will like to learn Italian just because my brother studied the same language. I will like to learn this language taking online courses just like my brother. My brother learns a lot of Italian words. Every single time that my brother was studying I tried to understand every word. I would like to learn this language in my house relaxed with my brother helping me if I don’t understand. I just started learning Italian so I will like to keep learning. With an Italian teacher that really knows Italian. I know; hello, how are you? In Italian (ciao, come stai?). I also know Fine and you? (Bene e tu?).I can actually make a sentence in Italian like; my favorite food is pizza (IL mio cibo preferito è la pizza). Or I could give you one of the quotes you gave me on Friday like “To belive yourself brave is to be brave” (“Per te belive coraggioso è di essere coraggiosi”). This entire thing I have given you in Italian I learn them in Internet with my brother. I have an especial brother that helps me with everything I need.

The first day of school I had to go to the doctor. So I didn’t have the time to go to school. I didn’t do much just played on the computer and watch TV. I also played basketball with my brother and Ds with my cousin.
8/11/09
The second day, which technically was my first day, was cool I liked all the teachers. They are cool I actually already knew most of them. Most of the classes were cool so I like everything. I started meeting new people, most of them are cool. Although I all ready had some friends because of my cousin Zoryan.
8/12/09
The third day was interesting because I met a new friend named Natalie she is as crazy as I am. We love being in “Dulce Sabor “. I love the “frape” of Oreo; it’s the best flavor that I’ve tried.
8/13/09
The fourth day was the day that I had my first Homework (” ahhhh” that is so not cool I wish I never have Homework in my life). I don’t like Homework; my home is not for doing work it’s for being relaxed. I am not going to be relaxed with homework, you have to be thinking and I don’t like thinking.
8/14/09
Yes, it’s Friday my favorite day; I love that day. Today is the day that my Social Studies teacher came; I don’t like Social Studies so much because of the days and dates. My favorite classes are Science, English and Mathematics.

Kirab Planell-Matias' Reflection

A simple friend identifies himself when he calls.
A real friend doesn't have to.
A simple friend opens a conversation with a full news bulletin on his life.
A real friend says, "What's new with you?"
A simple friend thinks the problems you whine about are recent.
A real friend says, "You've been whining about the same thing for 14 years. Get off your duff and do something about it."
A simple friend has never seen you cry.
A real friend has shoulders soggy from your tears.
A simple friend doesn't know your parents' first names.
A real friend has their phone numbers in his address book.
A simple friend brings a bottle of wine to your party.
A real friend comes early to help you cook and stays late to help you clean.

A simple friend hates it when you call after he has gone to bed.
A real friend asks you why you took so long to call.
A simple friend seeks to talk with you about your problems.
A real friend seeks to help you with your problems.
A simple friend wonders about your romantic history.
A real friend could blackmail you with it.
A simple friend, when visiting, acts like a guest.
A real friend opens your refrigerator and helps himself.
A simple friend thinks the friendship is over when you have an argument.
A real friend knows that it's not a friendship until after you've had a fight.
A simple friend expects you to always be there for them.
A real friend expects to always be there for you!

Language I will like to learn
I will like to learn French. I will like to learn it because it’s curious. French for me is something rare because it’s different from us. I will like to learn French in France because I think you can learn it with out mistakes. I also will want to learn it by somebody that speaks French. I will like to learn it when I have 20 years old. ¿why? Because I think it’s to hard for me now. I hope I can go to France to learn French. I always thought I can learn French. And I know I’m going to learn it. In France I think it’s hard to learn but that doesn’t matter. French is good. I know it. And I’m going to learn it with somebody.
